Team principal, Hyundai World Rally Team (1998-2003)
David began his career as technican with UK Dealer Opel Team where he was for five years in late 1970's. From 1980 onwards he was engineer at Opel Rally Team in Germany until moving to Chief Engineer's post at GM Eurosport few years later.
David Whitehead is owner of Motor Sport Developments (MSD) Ltd, which he founded in 1987. Through MSD he has been involved in number of track racing and rally programmes but wasn't player in WRC until 1998. At that time Hyundai contracted MSD to run their WRC effort for next three years. Contract involved running Coupe Kit Car in F2 for seasons 1998-1999 and step up into Accent WRC for 2000.
Before Hyundai contract MSD had various different projects under way simultaneously but as Hyundai World Rally Team's involvement with WRC grew, other projects were gradually cast away and MSD concentrated on HWRT full-time. In September 2003 Hyundai called it a day and decided to withdraw from WRC, officially to develop car for coming years and to return in 2006.
As owner of MSD, David Whitehead has also been team principal of Hyundai World Rally Team. With Hyundai's withdrawal MSD seems to have been left out.
