Team principal, Subaru World Rally Team (2000-2006) Technical Director, Subaru World Rally Team (2007-2008) Technical Director, Mini (2011-)
Despite his position in team management, deep down David is an engineer. He studied in universities of Leeds and later Coventry and as these studies were sponsored by Peugeot-Talbot, David joined the company when he graduated in 1980. After just few months he applied for engineer post in Talbot competitions department, then headed by Des O'Dell. He got hired and soon was working on Talbot Sunbeam Lotus and drivers like Guy Frequelin and Henri Toivonen.
Despite Henri's 1980 RAC win and Frequelin's being runner-up in 1981 championship, competition involvement of Talbot was slowly coming to a halt as company's focus moved to France and Peugeot 205T16 programme. David cashed out the redundancy money in 1983, set up his own company but soon got in contact with mr Richards. David hired David, Lapworth joining as eight employee of David Richards Autosport (later Prodrive), and way to goliathdom started.
Rothmans-Porsche 911 project followed, with plans to produce 4WD Group B Porsche 959. This never reached WRC stages and after Group B was banned, a new contract was needed. This came in form of BMW M3 and BMW was used equally well on asphalt stages in WRC as in circuit racing. And then came the Subaru contract, which was a real jackpot.
From the start, David has been technical director of Prodrive, having held various titles over the years. As time has passed and Prodrive has grown and expanded from rallying to cover also touring cars and engineering work for motor industry, also Lapworth's duties have changed and gradually he has left the day-to-day engineering work behind.
