From the start of the season it looked like Subaru would be the marque to beat. Ford had hastily changed official team and Mitsubishi used only one regular driver so it was no wonder that by winning eight of the 14 rounds Subaru collected the makes title.

In drivers' series situation was different because Colin was left beside the road once too often, allowing Makinen to take the title. Tommi scored only four wins against Colin's five but was half as often on podium.

Championship was very equally fought, with only single point separating champion and runner-up. Curiously enough, Tommi and Colin both won the same number of stages during whole year!

Mini Cooper and Monte Carlo are famous combination but this year Monte was mini for quite different reason. Only 23 crews started the rally because of double system, making Monte smallest WRC event in history.
