Some sources place the total distance of stages at 520 kilometers without specifying individual stage distances. The data that I have includes both stage distances and stage times and I am inclined to believe it until contradicting itinerary surfaces.
It has been suggested that rally organizers did ran 520 kilometers of stages but falsified the stage distances in road books in order to lead the police to think that average speed on the stages remained low.
That is consistent with low average speed in 1974 San Remo as well.
