Interesting though not long-standing rally, Morocco was quite unique despite being an african marathon event. Africa is a vast continent and conditions in Morocco are different from those of Safari or Ivory Coast, the other african marathons.
Some stages were effectively desert crossings, spanning huge distances up to several hundred kilometers. This meant that mid-stage refuelling was required. Besides these Paris-Dakar -precessors, there also were rough, at places very rough stages.
Morocco had been french territory until 1956 and whether it was old colonial ties or what but french cars conquered the event in hordes. Besides Peugeot and Alpine-Renault which were amongst winners in WRC years, Citroen had won the event in 1971.
