Rallycourse 1983
decoration
Second year sees small improvements here and there but unfortunately also some undesirable changes. Where rally reports in first edition were superb, these have now been cut down in length. Pictorials are confusingly in groups of two between rally reports instead of clear-cut format in first edition.

With the format change of Holmes' World Rallying series, Rallycourse remains sole annual to list rally itineraries and top stage times. Because of this I would recommend Rallycourse if you want to buy just one annual.

Text is of high quality and by such writers as Mike Greasley, Graham Robson, Peter Newton, Jeremy Walton, Nigel Fryatt, Hugh Bishop, Peter Foubister and Steve Fellows. Pictures are by Hugh Bishop, Reinhard Klein, LAT Photographic, Colin Taylor Productions and Richard Williams.

Ford 1700T World Exclusive

A four-page article about cancelled Ford Escort RS1700T rally car, including lots of photos. Article is very interesting, given the Ford's importance for rallying and expectations that RS1700T had. Written by Graham Robson, article is very technical and very thorough, even including a timeline of the project.

The Top Ten

Editor's opinion of who were the top ten drivers in 1983.

World Championship Review

Review of the 1983 season by Peter Newton.

The Austin-Healeys - rallying's 1960 superstars

Another article by Graham Robson, this time about big Austin-Healey rally cars.

Servicing with Toyota

Mike Greasley steps into Toyota's Cessna spotter plane at Ivory Coast rally alongside team boss Ove Andersson and co-ordinator Henry Liddon. Article follows the progress of 1983 Ivory Coast rally, victorious for Toyota, through the radio-controlled servicing planning made in the small plane.

The Lancia Rally

Jeremy Walton's article about Lancia 037 Rally. Fielding a two-wheel driven car one-and-a-half years after the debut of Audi quattro, it was a gamble on Lancia side but their bet (initially) won. Article has some in-depth technical parts most often found in Graham Robson's texts, but contains some splendid historical nuggets and development stories straight from Giorgio Pianta as well.

Roland Gumpert

A two-page interview with Audi boss and engineer Roland Gumpert (by Nigel Fryatt). Most space is taken up by numerous and big photos, leaving only little room for text. Despite shortness, article is good because there is so little information available about Gumpert.

Hannu Mikkola

Long interview with double material (some by Austrian journalist Herbert Volker and other by Peter Newton). Hannu goes through his entire career, talks in length about his time in Mercedes, arrival to Audi and anticipation before Walter Rohrl was to arrive for 1984 season.

Russell Brookes

Character and season of 1983 Open Rally Champion Russell Brookes, written by Steve Fellows.
