Name Saab is short for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (Swedish Airplane Ltd) and company roots lay in production of aircraft, manufacturing of cars made entry to company portfolio only later. Over the years company has been involved in number of mergers and acquisitions, from Saab-Scania joint-venture to acquisition by General Motors and later by Spyker.
Saab has always been a small niche manufacturer with strong emphasis on safety features and technically novel solutions. Their rallying involvement has been similarly focused, small time effort with limited success. Much of the Saab rallying success was scored before FIA created WRC in 1973 and as a such, are outside the scope of juwra.com, biggest of those being Erik Carlsson's Monte Carlo victories in 1962 and 1963.
However, Saab had it's presence felt even after 1973. It's rallying programme made number of Swedish rally drivers into international stars, most notably Stig Bloqvist and Per Eklund.
