Citroen is not as well known as their PSA stablemate Peugeot for their rally efforts even though Citroen has surprisingly long history. Spanning from the early DS23's to Group B Visa and their then-ultimate but shortlived BX4TC, continuing to Xsara F2 Kit Car, Xsara WRC and C4 WRC. Indeed, many of the team's personnel have spectacular history behind them, Guy Frequelin came within a shout of drivers title in 1981 and Jean-Claude Vaucard was involved with legendary Peugeot 205T16 project.
Citroen's current involvement with WRC began with Xsara Kit-Car project which team expanded to Xsara T4 without PSA approval. When they tried to obtain permission to run the completed car, internal company politics intervened and Citroen was told to abandon their project. After much wrangling team finally got permission to run their car first in French national championship and then gradually building on WRC assault.
For PSA their involvement has been an extreme success. Between them, Peugeot and Citroen won over half of the events in 2003, claiming first and second in manufacturers series by clear margin. After three makes titles for Peugeot, Citroen trotted on to claim the next three in 2003-2005 before temporarily pulling out. During 2006, while official team concentrated on developing the new C4 WRC, Citroen's colors were run by Kronos in a semi-official arrangement.
