Accent WRC was first of its kind from both MSD and Hyundai, and there were precious few people at MSD who had actual experience about 4WD turbo-charged WRCars. Yet, rival WRC teams have acknowledged that Accent is sound concept and seemed to be constrained mostly by the limited budget.
Car was much more advanced than for example relatively traditional Seat Cordoba but not much was expected from the first evolution. Ambitiously, a lot of the work was carried out by MSD, even down to the wiring looms, but for example engine tuning was done by Mountune (same company that did early Ford Focus WRC engines).
Accent engineering was mainly done by Nick Clipson, who saw all three Accent evolutions but left MSD for personal reasons in May 2002. Development and testing took better part of a year 1999 but with limited resources car wasn't fully developed by the time it first saw action.
