Like so many finnish rally drivers, Juha Kangas has rural background. Son to a farmer, Juha started his driving with tractors at the age of five but interest to cars came only some five years later. Rallies Juha entered in 1992 as he got the drivers' license and as most finnish rally drivers, he too started with Group F rear-wheel driven Ford Escort.
Just two years later he became Finnish Junior Rally Champion and when finnish motorsport association created coaching team for young rally drivers in 1995, Juha Kangas was included. After Junior title, Kangas had a lot to learn: move from RWD Escort to 4WD Galant, from blind rallies to pace-notes and from hobby to serious business.
Steady progress was rewarded in 1998 when Prodrive contracted Juha and with aim to tutor him into a future champion with five year programme. In New Zealand he was given Subaru's third car with instructions to settle in and learn. Paired with experienced Pentti Kuukkala, Juha followed instructions until he went off in stage 12. After that he did half a dozen rallies in Group N Imprezas and eventually Subaru deal was quietly scrapped.
Since then Juha led quiet life until Suzuki signed him to drive their Ignis in Junior Championship for 2002. Four accidents out of seven starts and that contract was not renewed. Next year Juha has moved to Australian national championship, driving for Les Walkden team.
