Europe is home of the rallying and European Rally Championship (ERC) events have been the large family of candidate rallies from amongst which new WRC events have more often than not been selected. For 40 years, Rally Bulgaria occupied a place in ERC before it was accepted for 2010 WRC calendar.
Geographically, rally is located near country's capital Sofia, yet it's route circles around ski-resort of Borovets high in mountains south-east of the capital. Originally, rally was held on other side of the country at the shores of Black Sea but moved westwards in 2002 and settled to Borovets.
Route runs in the mountains and while most of the action takes place between 500 and 1000 meters, there are stages reaching altitude of over two kilometers. In 2010 one stage was a real hill-climb, starting from 500 meters and ending at 2000 meters.

As average speeds show, there are plenty of wide and fast roads in Bulgaria. But even then the tarmac is bumpy and it's like driving over washboard.

On old side roads, tarmac is old and broken.
On technical stuff the road is twisty, going up and down and turning everywhere.
