Tide turns
Even though Lancia managed still to retain the manufacturers' title with six wins to Toyota's five, Sainz outscored his rivals in drivers' series with four wins.
Podiums
In podium finish statistics the contrast is deeper, Sainz outscoring his nearest rivals Auriol and Kankkunen with as clear margin as Lancia outscores Toyota.
In stages
Toyota's reliance on Sainz and his extensive programme is evident from stage wins. Spaniard scored 136 out of Toyota's 161 stage wins and won over twice as many stages as his nearest rivals. Same applies in stages in the lead but with even greater emphasis.
Events
With Sweden cancelled, Finland occupies the spot of the fastest rally by a clear margin. Along with Monte Carlo and RAC Rally, it also attracts most entries over the season whereas Ivory Coast entries collapse to mere 32 crews.
